DHS merges confidential data for citizenship checks with alarming few safeguards
I’d say this can’t be legal, but legality seems optional lately.
The Department of Homeland Security merged confidential Social Security Administration data on hundreds of millions of Americans into a system that states are now using to check voter rolls for noncitizens. ProPublica obtained details of the data-sharing agreement. It contains almost no safeguards for accuracy, minimal security protections, and explicitly allows DHS to use the data for other purposes - including immigration enforcement.
